IntheASTMsystem,aspeciﬁcAPIdesignationisassignedtoeachcategory.Thesystemisopen-ended,thatis,newdesignationsareassignedforusewithnewcategoriesaseachnewsetofoilperformancecharacteristicsaredeﬁned.Oilcategoriesmaybereferencedbyenginebuildersinmakinglubricantrecommendations,andusedbylubricantsuppliersandcustomersinidentifyingproductsforspeciﬁcapplications.Whereapplicable,candidateoilprogramsareconductedinaccordancewiththeAmericanChemistryCouncil(ACC)PetroleumAdditivesProductApprovalCodeofPractice
